Moss, algae and fungus are not just an eyesore on your home. They actually eat away at your shingles. They decompose your shingles the same way they decompose fallen trees in a forest. They are “feeding” on the organics that is in the shingle.

Without periodic cleaning of your roof, these algae can cause granule loss of the shingle reducing its life considerably!

Also, as the algae turns black and covers more area of the roof, the roof reduces its reflective abilities and causes the roof to retain more heat. This in turn will result in your air conditioner having to work harder to cool your home, making your electric bill higher and decreasing the life of your equipment.

This algae, or “Gloeocapsa Magma”, is spread several different ways. One is airborne, by the wind. Birds and other animals that come in contact with roofs can also spread the spores. This is why you see several homes that are close to each other have the same stains. The algae travels from house to house, sometimes an entire neighborhood can be infested.

Also, many roofs are infested with Lichens, a type of fungus. Lichens are maybe the most damaging thing that can grow on your roof. They also contain some type of algae.
